Self discipline
In my opinion self discipline is the most important requirement for a successful life. The problem is that human beings are not wired to be self disciplined. As a natural instinct; we seek out pain and try to avoid pleasure. In order to acquire self-discipline, you have to reverse this and instead embrace pain so that you can get pleasure later.
Self discipline is basically about doing the things you want and not the things you like. Do this simple exercise: Get a plain sheet of paper and write down the 5 goals you would work towards achieving, if you were suddenly gifted with 100% self-discipline. Then ask yourself why you are not doing these things that you actually want to do, but instead doing things that you simply enjoy but would rather not do. Let’s face it, no one actually wants to spend 6 hours watching TV or eating fatty foods or procrastinating.
This simple exercise will show you that many of the activities you are engaged in are things you would rather not be doing because they do not bring much value to your life. Why avoid activities that you actually want to do?
